EOES 2024 was hosted by Luxembourg University, where the competitors had access to the laboratories of the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medecine for their assignments.

As the other years it was a joyful reunion for many of the mentors and an unforgettable event for the youngsters from 23 European Union countries, one guest team from Ukraine and one observer from Romania.

This year too, the organisers managed to pair some nice experiments with two original themes:
CANCER-The origins of a genetic disorder and D'Schueberfouer.
Stacks Image 1417
Cancer is a genetic disorder characterised by uncontrolled cell divisions and growth. In our daily lives, we are constantly exposed to numerous factors that can damage our DNA.

In this assignment, participants had to investigate some chemical and physical factors that can cause DNA damage.

Furthermore, they also had to study the biological effects of U.V. light.

The Schueberfouer, founded in 1340 by Jang de Blannen, is still Luxembourg's biggest fair.

All kinds of drinks are served at the fair, including 'Lëtz limo', a lemonade based on lemons. Participants had to determine the citric acid concentration of the lemonade via a precipitation reaction and use this data to deduce how many lemons are theoretically needed for 1 bottle of lemonade.

A fair cannot be imagined without sausages with mustard. Of this mustard, they needed to determine the acetic acid concentration by titration. They also had to find out which spices were used for the mustard.

A fairground without a roller coaster and lots of colourful lights is unthinkable. A great starting point to investigate the physics of a roller coaster and experiment a bit with LEDs.

All kinds of dishes are also consumed at a fair. Whether it was fish or meat was examined microscopically. A fish species was also catalogued according to the structure and shape of its scales and the genetic relationship of fish to other clades was studied.
Kudos to the Executive committee and the Scientific committee for these challenging tasks and the enormous amount of work they put in.

We all agree this was a successful olympiad!

And last, but not least, don't forget to take a look at our dedicated Media page, where you can find numerous photos and a trailer of the Olympiad week.
